After a very well attended spring session of Amputee Walking School in March, a large group of participants made the June 18 evening practice session just as successful!
Dankmeyer co-hosted with the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab) at the UM Rehab Outpatient Therapy Gym on Kernan Avenue. Todd Schaffhauser presented the morning class to professionals and then led the hands-on exercises with evening attendees. This session had six Dankmeyer clinicians on hand to help out: Mark Hopkins, Angie Bryl, Rebecca Frost, Helena Ringer, Rochelle Groves and Resident John Cavallaro. Those with limb loss had a variety of devices between them, with some just starting out, others working on refining their technique with microprocessor components, and we even had someone with their special use prosthesis for running. (See the So EveryBody Can Move news for information on special use prostheses.)
There is a great deal of teamwork and camaraderie on these free evenings, with the clinicians, physical therapists, volunteers and family members all working together to participate in the success of our attendees. This was the second event of 2025. We will have one more event in 2025 with the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute on October 15, 2025.
